“The Speedrun feature is a little piece of magic”
December 11th 2023
Frederik Hvillum

The Speedrun feature on the Veo Editor lets users automatically skip moments where the ball goes out of play. Powered by Veo AI, Speedrun skips when players run to collect the ball for throw-ins, corners, and goal kicks.

For those deeply involved in the world of coaching, the post-match routine of video analysis plays a crucial role, offering vital insights into team dynamics and individual performances. However, this essential process comes at a price — a significant investment of time. The post-match analysis requires focused attention.

Delving into game footage can be quite time-consuming. Especially when watching less important parts, like players retrieving the ball for throw-ins or waiting for corners. As a coach, automatically skipping dead-ball moments will save you a bunch of time, especially on the first quick run-through, before diving into certain moments in more detail.

At Veo, we are consistently enhancing the Veo experience through the development of new features. Our goal is to simplify video analysis for coaches on the sidelines.

One of the newest features at Veo is called Speedrun. It allows you to watch only the effective playing time. Powered by Veo AI, it skips when players run to collect the ball for throw-ins, corners, and goal kicks. It also automatically cuts breaks in play, like halftime.

Saving time with Speedrun
Mark Maspero has been a heavy Veo user for several years. The former coach at the academies at Hull City and Scunthorpe United, and several step 5&6 clubs in the NCEL Toolstation league, is now the Manager of Dunnington FC, a team contesting for honors in the York Minster Premier League.

“Before Veo introduced the Speedrun feature, I would spend anything from 2 to 4 hours on a Sunday analysing Saturday's game. I would constantly be skipping backward and forwards,” the Dunnington FC manager states when asked about the new feature on the Veo Editor.

“With this feature, I’ve halved the time I spend analysing, and as a coach, being able to spend more time with your family and friends away from football is huge.”

'Speedrunning' is the act of playing a video game with the goal of completing it as fast as possible – no side tasks. For Veo, it means helping viewers to see every part of the on-the-ball action as fast as possible – no extra fluff.

On Veo's platform, there's the 5-second skip, but even with its use, the average time Maspero spends watching a game would still be too long.

“The Speedrun feature is a little piece of magic. The Premier League's average ball-in-play time is roughly 58 minutes in a 90-minute game. At our level in Step 7, it’s probably a fair amount lower. Even with the 5-second skip feature, it would probably take me 70 minutes just to watch the game. To analyse it, it would be several hours. The main impact is the time saved,” Maspero explains.

“Whilst analysing the game, I’d find myself skipping those moments when the ball’s out of play using the skip feature led to going past the restart. I’d then find myself skipping backwards and forwards till I found the correct point. This would happen especially on throw-ins. Now, using the speed run feature, I can trust that Veo will automatically do that for me and save me time and frustration.”

For Veo, it's crucial to make the analysis part of the coaching job as straightforward and easy as possible for coaches and anyone else interested in watching the games on Veo's platform.
Alexander Harvey, Product Manager at Veo, says:

“Speedrun is a time-saver not just for people who want to watch the game for enjoyment but also for coaches who want to focus on key moments without interruptions. This feature enhances the enjoyment of the game, smoothing out the experience by eliminating unnecessary pauses for both coaches and players.”

The Speedrun feature is available on all subscription plans.
