How Video Analysis is Making Learning More Concrete
June 17th 2021
Anna Louise Fjelldal

Northern NSW Soccer has been a user of Veo for a long time and was one of the first customers in Australia. We are incredibly proud that Northern NSW Soccer has partnered with Veo.

At Northern NSW Soccer they have huge ambitions for their players and coaches. We met up with two coaches and one of the Youth Players to hear how they are using Veo to make the learning more concrete and study their games and training sessions.

When the margins are getting finer

"Video technology in the future is only going to get more important," says Peter Haynes, Head of Soccer Development at Northern NSW.

Haynes has worked at Northern NSW Soccer since 2008 and has seen how the sport has changed over the last years.

"The margins are getting finer, so being able to get those one-percenters out of a changing structure or changing coach behavior or changing tactical processes is going to be vital in terms of getting that competitive edge," says Haynes.

"We provide footage to Soccer Australia tagged with individual players to make sure that we can keep those players on the radar," Haynes says. The club is keeping Foccer Australia up to date with the guys' level and technical and tactical ability.

"Veo does that beautifully by obviously automating that process for us," Haynes says.

- If we don't record the players, they potentially may not get seen

"We're such a big country; it's impossible to think that Soccer Australia staff can get to every possible region. If we do not record soccer matches, the players may potentially not get seen," says Jarrad Denham, Coach Development Officer at Northern NSW Soccer.

Recording the players also makes it easier for them to go back and analyze what was going on in the game.

"Before we had access to the Veo camera, my analysis of the game was very personal. I would be trying to remember how it happened in the game, and it wouldn't necessarily be accurate." says Tao Grieves, player for NewCastle Jets FC Youth.

Now with the Veo camera Grieves and the rest of the players can watch moments back and realize how it unfolded.

"When Veo is filming up the attacking end of the field, I can pause it, and I can shift it around to myself as a defender. I can analyze what we're doing as a line, whether in front or behind our defender. Just having that extra ability to see that whole pitch gives us that superb advantage," Grieves says.

Using Veo to assist coaches through their course

"We've never before been able to review the footage specifically of the coach. We can now understand and not just talk about what we've seen but actually show coaches the way that they coach on the sideline, their mannerisms and behaviors," says Haynes.

Reaching that level of consistency that coaches want and adequately analyzing the game has been one of the biggest challenges for the club.

"Veo eliminates the majority of those challenges. Quality, consistency, and vantage point are all sorted, and the automated nature of the camera makes it bulletproof," says Haynes.
